I love listening to this song because it reminds me that everything happens for a reason. In high school, I had a situationship with this boy and things didn’t work out. I was crushed that we didn’t work out (for like a minute lol). He wasn’t anything special, but he was the first guy who would talk to me and at least act like he wanted something more. Weirdly enough this song always reminds me of him and how grateful I am that I got out while I could. I genuinely dodged a bullet. I don’t know how to explain it without exposing this boy, but he ended up being crazy. When I heard about the drama involving him and my friend later on and what he put her through, I realized how easily that could have been me if we had continued talking. It indeed was the “Best Thing I Never Had.”
Behind the Lyrics:
In the song, Beyoncé is referencing her ex that screwed up their relationship. She starts by singing about the karma that “goes around and comes back around” because she has moved on and realizes he was not the one for her. She sings about the importance of self-love and growing from these unhealthy relationships. Sometimes a breakup is a blessing in disguise and puts you on the right path. Of course, it is hard to see that now, but what’s meant to be will always prevail. She ends the song by saying “I bet it sucks to be you right now” because although he was the best thing she never had, his mess-up cost him a chance to be with her as well.
