Blue World – Mac Miller

I used to think I was crazy for comparing the two, but ever since Angus Cloud’s passing the other day, I realized other’s also saw the resemblance between him and Mac Miller. His recent death being similar to Mac’s was even harder to process. They were both young and had a huge career ahead of them, which breaks my heart. Sending love to his family and friends, and if anyone is ever struggling with mental health, remember you are not alone, and my DMs are always open. I have also provided a list of resources if you ever need them.

Behind the Lyrics:

This song is about Mac Miller’s struggle with depression and his fight against the “devils” that plague his mind: “The Devil on my doorstep being so shady.” The song starts off as a remix of the Four Freshmen’s 1952 song “It’s a Blue World” which slowly fades into the beat. The history behind the color blue being associated with sadness goes all the way back to 17th century Britain with the term “blue devils.” This phrase was meant to describe the hallucinations one had when having withdrawals from excessive alcohol use. In the 19th century, “the blue devils” was used to encapsulate despondency or spiritual depression, which tied into the 1870s, when singing the blues became a form of folk song for African Americans to express their unhappiness in the Deep South.
