Knowing Me, Knowing You – ABBA

If you have watched Daisy Jones and the Six, then you also probably love hearing about the messy band drama that sparks their creativity for writing songs. I think there is also a story to be told about the inner workings of ABBA. A group of four, two couples, and both end in divorce. Obviously, I already knew this song from the Mamma Mia franchise, but it stood out to me at the ABBA Voyage (which was a 10/10 experience). Breakups are hard, especially if you’ve known this person for a long time. From experience, it sucks to be on both ends of a breakup: instigator and receiver (honestly couldn’t choose which one was worse). This song embodies that moment when you both know it has to end but neither person wants to be the one to do it because what if it’s a mistake? What if you’re letting go of something that could be fixed?

“Wonderin’ if I dodged a bullet or just lost the love of my life”

Behind the lyrics:

Bjorn Ulvaeus came up with the title “Knowing Me, Knowing You” and together, they built this song around that phrase. This song was written before any of the divorces and was a part of the first album to touch on more serious topics. Ulvaeus explains: “I think I wrote ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’ before the divorce. In many ways, Agnetha and my divorce was an amicable one, we just grew apart and decided let’s split up. Benny and Frida’s was a little more difficult. It was not a happy time but still very creative.” Although this song is mostly fiction since neither divorce has happened yet, it is a very sad song about a serious relationship ending and is sung with a an almost hurt tone rather than one of anger.
