This song was luckily brought back to my attention via TikTok. Growing up, I loved Disney (this is an understatement), but I especially loved the movie Tangled. It is so light-hearted and took an interesting twist on a well-known fairy tale called Rapunzel. I remember this song playing during the credits, and I wouldn’t turn the tv off so I could keep listening to the song. It is such a fun upbeat song, and I am so glad it got the recognition it deserved earlier this year. Betsy and I would blast this song on our walks back to the creek from the lib, so that is what this song now reminds me of — the beginning of Thanksgiving break my sophomore year of college.
Behind the Lyrics:
To no one’s surprise, this song is about a girl who wants something but cannot have it, only to realize what she needs is right in front of her. If we are basing this on the movie, Rapunzel’s whole life all she wanted was to see the floating lights. And once she achieved this dream, she realized that her new dream was to be with Eugene (Flynn) Rider. Although this song is referencing the movie Tangled, I think it sends a great message which is to appreciate what you have. I think a lot of times we tend to focus on the things we don’t have rather than the things we do. I’m not saying that it is bad to dream or to want something, but it is important to be grateful for the abundance of things you already have in your life. If you cannot think of one thing to be thankful for, I will give you one: being able to read this right now. Believe it or not, this is a luxury, being able to see and read is a luxury, being able to listen to music is a luxury, and being alive is a luxury. Don’t ever take everyday functions for granted and be thankful for what you do have. “Be grateful for life. Not everyone has made it this far.”
