December, 1963 (Oh What a Night) – Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons

This song is a new addition to my collection. Although not a new song by any means, I recently found it getting stuck in my head and having to play it whenever I get the chance. For some, it may remind them of Windfall (it used to for me), but now it reminds me of a pub in London called “Oneil’s,” singing and dancing with my hometown friends who I hadn’t seen in forever. This song is also empowering in some way. Maybe it’s just me, but I love the chorus of the song and the way the band plays around with the tempo. Below, I will talk about the meaning behind the lyrics of the song, and it is giving “Night Changes” by One Direction.

Behind the Lyrics:

Did you know this song was originally set in 1933 with the title “December 5th, 1933” to celebrate the repeal of prohibition? Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio’s wife Judy Parker were not too thrilled about the meaning, so together they rewrote the lyrics and a bit of the melody to turn it into a nostalgic love song. The sexual overtones in the song had to actually be downplayed on the radio, and Frankie Valli later confessed the song was “about losing your cherry.” You probably caught this through the lyrics, but more specifically, it is said to be about Gaudio’s courtship with his wife.
