Never Seen the Rain – Tones and I

Ah yes, this song was my top listened-to song of 2020. My first memory of this song is during the summer of 2020. I was with my camp friends in Charleston, and there wasn’t much to do except drive to Harris Teeters and listen to music. Our driver and aux, Bladen, would connect and it would automatically play “Chariot” by Gavin DeGraw because it was first alphabetically in her Apple music. But next, we would play “Never Seen the Rain” and it matched the vibes perfectly. This song accompanied the aesthetic of our late-night drives along the beach as we rolled down the windows and sang at the top of our longs. I had somewhat forgotten about this song until one of my friends Besty brought it back earlier this year. She would play it whenever she could for a good month until we found another song to obsess over. Ultimately, this song is one of many that reminds me of friendships and having fun.

Behind the Lyrics:

Tones and I released this song as part of the album “The Kids Are Coming.” Despite the upbeat track, the song is about people who have lived in a cycle of mediocrity and have yet to change their life due to fear of failure. In the song, there is a sailor who has gone their whole life without experiencing rain, which is a metaphor for the hardships we face in life. Tones and I tells the audience that part of the journey is experiencing those hardships, but when they come, you have people around you to support you even if you feel alone. Tones and I is mostly reflecting on her journey navigating the music industry and the struggles she had to overcome to be where she is now.

I do believe it is scary to take a risk and change a part of your life or routine that you have grown accustomed to, but change won’t happen unless you do something. As my late cross-country coach, Coach Zell, would say “Get comfortable with being uncomfortable,” meaning you have to push yourself outside of your comfort zone to create a new baseline for yourself.
